Meet Your Professional Groomer

Shirl Schaeffer owns Classi K9 Clips and has groomed dogs for over 40 years. She's a Nationally Certified Master Groomer, and she still takes ongoing training to stay sharp on new techniques and coat types. Most groomers rush a puppy's first visit. Shirl doesn't. She reads each puppy's comfort level and adjusts her pace, because a calm, trained hand matters more than speed. Our whole team keeps up with industry certifications, so your puppy gets patient, skilled care from day one.

What Happens During Your Puppy's First Visit

We suggest bringing your puppy in once they're fully vaccinated, usually around 12 to 16 weeks old. Starting early builds positive associations with grooming, so your pup learns it's a normal part of life, not something to fear. Here's what your puppy will experience at the salon.

Getting Comfortable in the Salon

We let your puppy explore at their own pace first. They meet our team, sniff around, and get used to the sound of clippers and the hair dryer before we touch a single tool. This first exposure lowers stress and helps your puppy feel safe.

Bath Time

Your puppy gets a bath in a small bucket or tub, sized right for their breed. We use gentle shampoo made for a puppy's sensitive skin. We keep a cotton ball in each ear to keep water out, then rinse carefully and wipe your pup dry. A calm bath now means an easier bath every time after.

Ears, Teeth, and Nails

We check your puppy's ears for early signs of infection or irritation, using cotton swabs only where it's safe to do so. We introduce a toothbrush so your puppy gets used to having their teeth touched, since dental care is an important part of their overall health. We also do a first nail trim with clippers, working slowly so your puppy doesn't associate nail care with pain or pulling.

A Light Trim, Not a Full Haircut

Instead of a full clip, we focus on a light trim around the face, feet, and belly. We check for matted fur, tangles, and any skin issues while we comb through their coat. This step builds tolerance for handling without asking too much on the first visit.

Praise the Whole Way Through

Encouragement is a top priority for us. Positive reinforcement and a steady, patient voice help your puppy connect grooming with a good experience instead of a risk to avoid.

Why This First Visit Matters

Puppies who have a positive first grooming experience rarely grow into anxious adult dogs at the salon. Shirl's decades of hands on work mean she knows how far to push and when to slow down or stop. That judgment protects your puppy's well being and makes every future visit easier, no matter their breed or coat type.

We Watch Your Puppy's Health Too

A puppy's coat and skin change fast as they grow. During every visit, we check for irritation, ear infections, dry skin, or early coat problems that might need veterinary medicine or a vet's attention. We're glad to share tips on brushing, bathing, and coat care between visits, whether your puppy has a curly coat, a double coat, or anything in between.
